I've started writing fiction again. I've been working on my novel since around fall 1995, and the plot is nearing completion. But plotting is not the same as writing. I needed to write, and couldn't fight it any longer. This is where short stories are helpful.
My short story is called "Principalities and Powers", and deals with a supernatural conspiracy that spans several centuries (maybe longer--I'm still deciding) and has infiltrated the U.S. government and the governments of other world powers. It will end with the triumph of good over evil, though not in so straightforward a manner.
I came across a quote from writer Michael O'Brien that very appropriately describes my story:
"The truth is, we live in a hierarchical creation that is involved in a vast and complex war that will last until the end of time. Born into this war zone, we are profound mysteries to ourselves, inherently glorious and potentially tragic."
Mr. O'Brien graciously agreed to allow me to use this quote to open my story, should I choose to do so.
I hope to have the story complete by April.
